Betting In Texas Holdem
Texas Holdem has four betting rounds after each dealing of the cards needed for the game. The game starts with the forced bet posted by the first two players sitting to the left side of the dealer. It is also known as Blinds. These two players are the only who put money in the pot before they see their cards. The purpose of the blinds is to ensure that there will be money in the pot when the game starts. The other poker games such as Seven Card Stud and Draw poker are not played with Blinds. They start with ante and all the players around the table must put money in the pot. In Texas Holdem the ante is replaced with the Blinds. According to the basic Texas Holdem rules each player who joins the table must play first the small Blind.
The Blinds are two - Small and Big Blind. As a rule, the small blind is the half of the big blind and both of them are determined before the game starts. In online poker rooms, they are announced in the Lobby from where the players choose where to play. When you enter at the Lobby you will see a list of the tables - the name of the game that is played there, the amount accepted as minimum bet for the table. This is also known as table stakes, for example you will see $1/$2 - this means that the small blind is $1 and the big blind is $2.
After the blinds are posted, the dealer deals two cards to each player face down. These are the hole or pocket cards, they are for personal use and you have to be careful not to expose them to anybody around the table. Once all the players receive their hole cards, the first betting round starts. This round is called Preflop and it begins with the player sitting to the left side of the Big Blind. This is made because the blinds have already put money in the pot.
In Texas Holdem as in all poker games, the players have four options during the betting round. They can fold, call, raise and check.
- Fold - this option gives an opportunity to the player to stop playing for the initial game, if he is not sure that he has a chance to win.
- Call - this is when the player put the same amount of money as the highest post in the initial game before he acts. This can be made, if the player thinks that he has a chance to win the hand and he declares with this that he wants to see the next cards to be dealt.
- Raise - this option is when the player put larger amount of money than the highest post for the initial game before him. This can be made if the player is sure that he will take the pot - if he has strong cards.
- Check - this option gives the player opportunity to stay in the game without betting anything. If all active players check you still have a chance to win, but if someone after you choose one of the above options, you have to do so. Usually, the players choose this option to see how the other players will act and this will help them to choose what to do.
As a rule, all players have three bets per round.
Once all the players act, the dealer deals the first three community cards in the middle of the table face up - this is the Flop. Then the active players, who are still in the game bet again. This is the second betting round and it starts with the first active player sitting to the left side of the dealer. Here the players have the same options as mentioned above and when they announce their decision the dealer deals the fourth board card face up. The fourth betting round is known as Turn or Fourth Street and before it, the dealer must burn the top card of the deck. This is made before each of the dealing rounds. The active players bet again - they have all the options - to fold, to check, to call and to raise. The final betting round is known as the River, when the fifth board card is dealt. It occurs after the betting in the Turn finishes. In the River the active players announce their last bets and once they do it, the Showdown occurs. This is when all active players show their cards and the winner is announced. It is not rare the situation when the game finishes before the Showdown. This is when there is only one player remaining in the game - when all another players have Fold. This situation in Texas Holdem is known as Stealing the pot.
